Advantix for Dog Fleas & Ticks | Spot-On Treatment, Fast Delivery

Advantix

Advantix is a prescription-only spot-on medicine for dogs needing protection against a combination of external parasites. It contains imidacloprid and permethrin, providing flea control alongside tick-killing and repellent activity against specified ticks and biting insects. Advantix is for dogs only and must never be applied to cats. Permethrin is extremely poisonous to cats, and exposure can be fatal. For dogs in the appropriate age and weight range, the liquid is applied directly to undamaged skin using a measured pipette. The current range listed here includes small, medium, large and extra-large dog presentations. Choosing the correct weight band provides the appropriate quantity of both active ingredients, while the parasites and exposure risks determine whether this combination is suitable.

Fleas feed on blood and can cause scratching, irritated skin and flea allergy dermatitis, an exaggerated reaction to flea saliva. Advantix kills fleas on the dog within one day and prevents further flea infestation for four weeks. Flea eggs and immature stages can remain in bedding, carpets and other sheltered areas, allowing newly emerged adults to keep reaching pets during an established infestation. Advantix therefore works alongside appropriate household control, such as vacuuming and washing bedding, with other animals receiving treatments suitable for their own species. Scratching may be concentrated around the back and tail base, although a flea-allergic dog can react to very few bites. Dark specks of flea dirt in the coat are another possible sign, even when moving fleas are difficult to spot. Biting lice are another authorised target. These parasites live in the coat and can cause irritation and poor coat condition, particularly when numbers build up. Effective control depends on treating the affected animal with the correct product and addressing possible sources of reinfestation.

Imidacloprid in Advantix acts on insect nerve receptors, disrupting normal nerve transmission and killing susceptible fleas. Permethrin acts on nerve-cell sodium channels and contributes both killing and repellent effects against relevant external parasites. Its anti-feeding action helps reduce the opportunity for biting insects to take a blood meal. Advantix provides four weeks of tick activity against Ixodes ricinus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and three weeks against Dermacentor reticulatus. Repellent protection lasts two to three weeks against the specified sand flies, two to four weeks against the specified mosquitoes and four weeks against stable flies. These differing periods mean a single four-week claim should not be applied to every parasite. Ticks already attached before treatment may remain visible and should be removed appropriately.

Advantix also has authorised claims for reducing the risk of certain infections transmitted by vectors, the parasites that carry an organism between animals. Its activity against the brown dog tick can reduce the risk of canine ehrlichiosis, while repelling specified sand flies can reduce the risk of infection with Leishmania infantum. These benefits arise from effects on the vector, not treatment of an established infection in the dog. Advantix does not guarantee that every tick or insect bite will be prevented. For travel to an affected region, timing is particularly relevant: the ehrlichiosis risk-reduction effect begins from three days after application, and immediate sand-fly protection is not established. Dogs need protection from sand-fly exposure during the first 24 hours after the initial application for the relevant leishmaniosis-prevention use.

The four Advantix presentations currently listed cover dogs weighing 1.5–4kg, over 4–10kg, over 10–25kg and over 25–40kg. Their pipettes contain 0.4ml, 1ml, 2.5ml and 4ml respectively. Advantix must not be used in puppies younger than seven weeks or dogs below the minimum weight for the appropriate presentation. For dogs up to 10kg, the contents are applied directly to exposed skin between the shoulder blades. For larger dogs, the contents are distributed over four spots along the back, from the shoulders towards the base of the tail. Avoid applying so much at one spot that liquid runs down the animal’s side. A dog weighing exactly 10kg belongs in the over 4–10kg band, while exactly 25kg belongs in the over 10–25kg band.

After applying Advantix, keep the dog away from cats until the application site is dry and prevent cats from grooming the treated area. If a cat is exposed, seek immediate veterinary help. People, especially children, should also avoid contact with the wet site. Advantix remains effective after occasional wetting, but prolonged or frequent water exposure can reduce persistent protection. Shampooing is best done before treatment or at least two weeks afterwards, and treated dogs must stay out of surface water for at least 48 hours because the ingredients are hazardous to aquatic life. Temporary greasy hair or local itching can occur, while vomiting, irritation or neurological signs require attention. Keep unopened pipettes in their original packaging and use each presentation according to its own directions.

What parasites does Advantix treat in dogs?

Advantix kills fleas and biting lice and provides killing and repellent activity against specified ticks. It also repels certain sand flies, mosquitoes and stable flies. Protection periods differ between parasites, so the four-week flea claim should not be assumed to apply to every insect or tick species.

Can Advantix be used on cats?

No. Advantix is for dogs only and contains permethrin, which is extremely toxic to cats and can be fatal. Cats must not groom treated dogs until the application site is dry. Any suspected feline exposure requires immediate veterinary help, even before obvious symptoms develop.

Which Advantix weight band does my dog need?

The four presentations listed cover dogs weighing 1.5–4kg, over 4–10kg, over 10–25kg and over 25–40kg. Their pipettes contain different amounts of medicine. A dog weighing exactly 10kg uses the over 4–10kg presentation; a dog weighing exactly 25kg uses the over 10–25kg presentation.

How quickly does Advantix kill fleas?

Advantix kills fleas on a treated dog within one day and prevents further flea infestation for four weeks. During an established household infestation, new fleas can continue emerging from immature stages in the environment. Vacuuming, bedding hygiene and suitable treatment of other pets help control that continuing exposure.

Where should Advantix be applied?

For dogs up to 10kg, apply the pipette to exposed skin between the shoulder blades. For larger dogs, distribute it across four spots along the back, from the shoulders towards the tail base. Apply only to undamaged skin and avoid excessive liquid running down the coat.

How long does Advantix protect against ticks?

Tick protection lasts four weeks against Ixodes ricinus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and three weeks against Dermacentor reticulatus. Ticks already present before application may remain attached and need removal. The treatment reduces exposure risk but cannot guarantee that every tick attachment or transmitted infection will be prevented.
