What is Vetoryl?
Vetoryl is a capsule that can be given to dogs for the treatment of Cushings disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism. Vetoryl is a prescription-only medication and can only be supplied once you have a prescription from your vet.
Cushing’s syndrome is one of the most commonly diagnosed canine endocrine disorders. Cushing’s syndrome is usually seen in older dogs and can be either spontaneous or iatrogenic. The signs of Cushing’s syndrome in dogs are due to an excess of circulating glucocorticoids, particularly cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced in the cortex of the adrenal glands. The normal function of cortisol is to help the body respond to stress and change, and also to prepare the body for the fight or flight response. Cortisol mobilises nutrients, modifies the body’s response to inflammation and stimulates the liver to raise the blood sugar.
Vetoryl is available in gelatin capsules, contains the active ingredient trilostane. Vetoryl capsules are available in strengths of 10mg, 30mg, 60mg and 120mg.
How does Vetoryl work?
Vetoryl contains the active ingredient Trilostane and works by blocking the enzymes within the adrenal glands involved in the overproduction of the steroid, Cortisol . it is this steroid, Cortisol that is responsible for all of the problems associated with Cushing’s Disease in Dogs.
Vetoryl blocks the excessive production of cortisol by reversibly inhibiting the action of the enzyme 3-ß hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. While treatment with Vetoryl significantly reduces serum cortisol concentrations, it has not been found to reduce aldosterone significantly.
Vetoryl Capsules should be administered to your dog orally once daily in the morning with food. Administration with food will significantly increase the rate and extent of absorption of Vetoryl.
Once treatment has started, you should monitor your dog’s activity, appetite and water intake. If you dog shows any sign of illness you should contact your Vet immediately.
How is Vetoryl administered?
Vetoryl capsules are available in strengths of 10mg, 30mg, 60mg and 120mg. They are hard capsules that are usually given to your dog once a day with food. Your Vet will calculate the correct dose for your Dog. The starting dose is usually 2.2mg – 6.7mg/kg
ONCE TREATMENT HAS STARTED, YOU SHOULD MONITOR YOUR DOG’S ACTIVITY, APPETITE AND WATER INTAKE. IF YOUR DOG SHOWS ANY SIGNS OF ILLNESS, YOU SHOULD STOP TREATMENT AND CONTACT YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY.
