8mg Reconcile Chewable Tablet for Dogs - Single Tablet

8mg Reconcile for Dogs is a prescription medication that contains fluoxetine. Reconcile 8mg is available as chewable tablets and it's indicated as an aid in the treatment of separation-related disorders in dogs manifested by destruction and inappropriate behaviours (vocalisation and inappropriate defaecation and/or urination).

Reconcile is a prescription-only medication for dogs suffering from separation anxiety. The 8mg dose is typically prescribed for small to medium-sized dogs, depending on the animal's weight and condition. Reconcile is designed to be used in combination with a structured behaviour modification programme, under the guidance of a veterinary professional.

Reconcile contains fluoxetine hydrochloride, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). This active ingredient works by increasing the amount of serotonin available in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood, anxiety, and behaviour. In dogs with separation anxiety, serotonin levels may be imbalanced, which can contribute to distress when left alone. By restoring this balance, Reconcile can help reduce anxious behaviours over time.

Separation anxiety is a common behavioural issue in dogs. It occurs when a dog becomes distressed or exhibits undesirable behaviours when separated from their owner or primary caregiver. Common signs include excessive barking or howling, destructive chewing, attempts to escape, urinating or defecating indoors, and pacing. These behaviours often begin shortly after the owner leaves and can be distressing for both the dog and the household.

The 8mg strength of Reconcile is usually prescribed for dogs weighing between 8.1kg and 16kg. Dosage is typically given once daily, and it is important that the medication is administered at the same time each day to maintain a consistent effect. Tablets are flavoured to aid compliance and are often well-accepted by dogs when offered with food or as a treat.

Description

8mg Reconcile Tablets for Dogs - For separation-related anxiety disorders in dogs

Reconcile may only be supplied with a valid veterinary prescription issued by your vet. You should only purchase Reconcile 8mg if you have or are in the process of arranging such a prescription. See information bar for further details.

It is important to note that Reconcile is not a quick-fix solution. Reconcile is most effective when combined with a behaviour modification plan tailored to the individual dog. This may include desensitisation techniques, routine adjustments, and structured training exercises. The goal is to help the dog build confidence and learn to remain calm in the owner's absence. Reconcile supports this process by making the dog more receptive to training and less reactive to separation-related triggers.

Treatment with 8mg Reconcile usually takes several weeks to show noticeable effects. In clinical trials, many dogs showed improvement in signs of separation anxiety within four to eight weeks. However, some dogs may require a longer course of treatment. Progress should be monitored regularly by your Vet, and adjustments to the behaviour plan or dosage may be necessary based on the dog’s response.

Reconcile should only be used in dogs that are six months of age or older. It must not be used in dogs with a history of seizures or those with known hypersensitivity to fluoxetine. It should also not be given in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within a minimum of 14 days of discontinuing such treatments. A full medical history should be discussed with the prescribing veterinarian before beginning treatment.

Like all medications, Reconcile may cause side effects in some dogs. The most commonly reported include reduced appetite, lethargy, gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or diarrhoea, and changes in sleep patterns. These effects are often mild and may decrease as the dog adjusts to the medication. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as seizures or aggression may occur. If any concerning symptoms develop, veterinary advice should be sought immediately.

Regular follow-up appointments are essential during treatment with Reconcile. The veterinarian will assess the dog’s progress, monitor for side effects, and make any necessary adjustments. If the dog shows significant improvement, the medication may be gradually tapered off under professional guidance. It is not advisable to discontinue Reconcile abruptly, as this may result in withdrawal symptoms or a return of anxiety-related behaviours.

Reconcile should always be stored out of reach of children and animals. Tablets should be kept in their original packaging at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Unused or expired medication should be disposed of safely, in accordance with local regulations or pharmacy guidelines.

Reconcile is only available on prescription and should never be used without veterinary approval. Each dog’s behavioural and medical history must be taken into account to ensure safe and appropriate use. The 8mg dose offers a convenient option for dogs in the lower weight range needing targeted support as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for separation anxiety.

By working at a neurochemical level to reduce emotional distress, Reconcile allows dogs to become more receptive to behaviour training and gradually learn to cope with time alone. Through this combined approach, many dogs are able to enjoy improved wellbeing and a better quality of life.
