64mg Reconcile for Dogs is a veterinary prescription medication that contains fluoxetine.

Reconcile 64mg is available as chewable tablets and it's indicated as an aid in the treatment of separation-related disorders in dogs manifested by destruction and inappropriate behaviours (vocalisation and inappropriate defaecation and/or urination).

Reconcile for Dogs aids in the treatment of separation-related disorders in dogs. These disorders are often manifested by destructive and inappropriate behaviours, such as vocalisation and inappropriate defecation and/or urination, particularly when the dog is left alone.

Reconcile 64mg for Dogs is a once-a-day, flavoured, chewable tablet that is prescribed by your veterinarian. The active ingredient is fluoxetine, an antidepressant that works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the dog's brain. This helps to achieve a calmer frame of mind in dogs, making them more receptive to behaviour modification training.

Separation anxiety is a condition that affects up to 17% of dogs. It can be inherited or acquired, depending on the dog’s history and experiences. The anxiety develops when the dog is unable to soothe their anxiety without the assistance of their caregiver, or when being alone is associated with uncertainty or fear-inducing signals such as noise. Separation anxiety is a common condition in dogs, causing distress when they are left alone. Affected dogs may exhibit destructive behaviours, excessive barking, inappropriate urination, or attempts to escape. Reconcile is prescribed alongside a structured behavioural modification programme to help dogs develop healthier coping mechanisms and reduce anxiety symptoms over time.

Description

64mg Reconcile Tablets for Dogs - For separation-related anxiety disorders in dogs

Reconcile may only be supplied with a valid veterinary prescription issued by your vet. You should only purchase Reconcile 64mg if you have or are in the process of arranging such a prescription. See information bar for further details.

Reconcile contains fluoxetine hydrochloride, an SSRI that increases serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in mood regulation, emotional stability, and stress response. When serotonin levels are too low, dogs may experience heightened anxiety, fear, and compulsive behaviours.

Fluoxetine works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in nerve cells, allowing more of this neurotransmitter to remain active in the brain. This prolonged availability of serotonin helps stabilise mood, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calm. Over time, dogs become less reactive to stressors and are better able to adapt to changes in their environment.

Reconcile is administered orally once daily, with or without food. It may take several weeks before noticeable improvements in behaviour occur, as the medication needs time to build up in the system. Veterinary monitoring is necessary to assess the dog’s response and adjust the dosage if required.

Understanding Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Separation anxiety is a behavioural disorder that occurs when a dog becomes overly distressed in the absence of its owner. Dogs with this condition struggle to cope with being left alone and may display a range of stress-related behaviours. The severity of symptoms can vary, with some dogs experiencing mild discomfort and others showing extreme distress.

Common signs of separation anxiety include excessive barking or howling, destructive chewing, pacing, drooling, and house soiling despite being house-trained. Some dogs attempt to escape confinement by scratching at doors, digging, or trying to break through windows. These behaviours can result in self-injury and household damage if left unaddressed.

The exact cause of separation anxiety is not always clear, but factors such as past trauma, changes in routine, lack of socialisation, or excessive attachment to an owner may contribute to its development. Certain breeds may also be more predisposed to anxiety disorders.

Managing Separation Anxiety with Reconcile

Reconcile is not a standalone treatment for separation anxiety but is most effective when combined with a structured behavioural modification programme. Training techniques such as gradual desensitisation, counter-conditioning, and positive reinforcement help dogs develop confidence and independence.

Veterinarians typically recommend starting with the lowest effective dose and adjusting as needed based on the dog’s response. While Reconcile is generally well tolerated, some dogs may experience mild side effects such as decreased appetite, drowsiness, or gastrointestinal upset. Rarely, more serious reactions such as increased agitation or restlessness may occur. Any changes in behaviour should be reported to a veterinarian for assessment.

Dogs undergoing treatment should be regularly monitored to evaluate progress and determine whether adjustments to their training or medication are necessary. Owners should follow the prescribed dosage and not discontinue treatment abruptly, as sudden withdrawal can cause adverse effects.

By balancing serotonin levels, Reconcile helps dogs with separation anxiety become more receptive to training and behavioural therapy. Over time, this medication supports long-term improvements in anxiety management, helping dogs develop healthier responses to being alone.
