372638
Solensia is a prescription medication used to manage osteoarthritis pain in cats. It contains frunevetmab, a monoclonal antibody designed to target and block nerve growth factor (NGF), a key driver of osteoarthritic pain. Solensia is administered as a monthly injection by a veterinarian to provide long-term relief from joint pain and discomfort.
Solensia is a refrigerated medication - We will send it via Royal Mail Special Delivery using insulated packaging and ice packs. A signature is required on delivery and it must be put straight into a fridge. We cannot guarantee same day dispatch for orders placed after 12pm. VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION REQUIRED.
Osteoarthritis is a common but often undiagnosed condition in older cats. Solensia helps improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance a cat’s overall quality of life. Unlike traditional pain medications, Solensia is specifically designed for long-term use with minimal side effects.
How Solensia Works
Solensia contains frunevetmab, a monoclonal antibody that targets NGF, a protein involved in pain signalling. In cats with osteoarthritis, NGF levels are elevated, leading to increased pain sensitivity and joint discomfort.
By binding to NGF, Solensia prevents it from interacting with pain receptors in the nervous system. This reduces pain transmission and helps control the chronic discomfort associated with osteoarthritis. Since monoclonal antibodies function like natural proteins, they are gradually broken down by the body without placing strain on the liver or kidneys.
Solensia provides continuous pain relief for up to one month, making it a convenient option for cats who struggle with daily oral medications.

Understanding Osteoarthritis in Cats
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that causes pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It occurs when the protective cartilage in the joints wears down over time, leading to inflammation and discomfort.
Osteoarthritis is a progressive condition, meaning symptoms worsen over time if left untreated. Although it is more common in older cats, younger cats can also develop joint degeneration due to injury, genetics, or underlying health conditions.
Signs of Osteoarthritis in Cats
Cats are naturally skilled at hiding pain, making osteoarthritis difficult to detect in the early stages. Instead of obvious limping, affected cats may show subtle behavioural changes, such as:
- Reduced activity levels
- Hesitation before jumping onto furniture
- Difficulty climbing stairs or using the litter tray
- Stiffness, especially after resting
- Changes in grooming habits, such as overgrooming or neglecting certain areas
- Irritability or reluctance to be touched
- Increased time spent sleeping or resting
- Loss of muscle tone due to decreased movement
These changes are often mistaken for normal ageing, but they may indicate joint pain. If osteoarthritis is suspected, a veterinary assessment is recommended to determine the best course of treatment.
Risk Factors for Osteoarthritis in Cats
Several factors can increase a cat’s risk of developing osteoarthritis, including:
- Age – Older cats are more prone to joint degeneration.
- Obesity – Excess weight puts additional strain on the joints.
- Previous injuries – Fractures or joint injuries can lead to long-term damage.
- Genetics – Certain breeds, such as Maine Coons and Scottish Folds, are predisposed to joint issues.
- Joint abnormalities – Conditions such as hip dysplasia can contribute to osteoarthritis.
Early intervention can help slow disease progression and improve a cat’s comfort.
Administering Solensia to Cats
Solensia is a once-monthly injection given by a veterinarian. The injection is administered under the skin (subcutaneously) and does not require sedation.
Since it provides continuous pain relief for four weeks, it is a convenient option for cats who are difficult to medicate with oral treatments. Regular monthly injections ensure consistent pain management and help maintain mobility.
The effects of Solensia may take a few weeks to become noticeable, with many cats showing improvement after the first or second dose. Veterinary check-ups help assess the cat’s response to treatment and determine whether continued use is beneficial.
Expected Response to Treatment
Solensia is designed to provide gradual and sustained pain relief. Many cats show signs of increased activity, improved mobility, and reduced stiffness after one to two doses. Some cats may require ongoing treatment to maintain long-term comfort.
Veterinary monitoring is essential to assess the effectiveness of Solensia and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.
Possible Side Effects of Solensia
Solensia is generally well tolerated, but some cats may experience mild side effects. These can include:
- Temporary pain or discomfort at the injection site
- Mild lethargy or reduced appetite for a short period
- Occasional vomiting or diarrhoea
Serious side effects are rare. If a cat experiences persistent symptoms or an allergic reaction, veterinary attention should be sought immediately.
Precautions and Contraindications
Solensia is not suitable for all cats. Important considerations include:
- Not recommended for use in pregnant or lactating cats – The effects on kittens have not been fully studied.
- Not suitable for cats with known hypersensitivity to frunevetmab – Alternative pain relief may be required.
- Caution in cats with immune-mediated diseases – Veterinary assessment is needed to determine suitability.
Solensia should only be used under veterinary supervision, and regular check-ups are necessary to monitor the cat’s response to treatment.
Ongoing Management of Osteoarthritis
Solensia is an effective pain management option, but additional steps can help support joint health and improve mobility. Veterinarians may recommend:
- Weight management – Maintaining a healthy weight reduces joint strain.
- Joint supplements – Omega-3 fatty acids and glucosamine may provide additional joint support.
- Environmental modifications – Soft bedding, ramps, and low-sided litter trays can make movement easier.
- Regular exercise – Gentle movement helps maintain muscle strength and joint flexibility.
Combining Solensia with these management strategies can help enhance the cat’s quality of life and prevent further joint deterioration.
Storage and Handling of Solensia
Solensia should be stored in a refrigerated environment (2°C to 8°C) and protected from direct light. It should not be frozen.
