Trilotab 30mg Chewable Tablets for Dogs: Managing Canine Cushing’s Syndrome

30mg Trilotab contains trilostane, an active substance that inhibits the enzyme 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. This inhibition reduces cortisol synthesis in the adrenal glands, thereby decreasing excessive cortisol levels in dogs with Cushing’s syndrome.

Administered orally, 30mg Trilotab is designed as a chewable, flavoured tablet to facilitate ease of administration. The tablet features a cross-shaped break line, allowing it to be divided into two or four equal parts to achieve precise dosing tailored to the dog's weight and specific needs.

Description

Cushing’s syndrome, also known as hyperadrenocorticism, is a common endocrine condition in dogs, particularly those entering their middle to senior years. It develops due to prolonged exposure to excessive levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. This disorder can result in various health problems, such as increased thirst and urination, an overly robust appetite, an enlarged abdomen, hair loss, and weakened muscles.

Understanding Cushing’s Syndrome in Dogs

There are two primary types of Cushing’s syndrome:

Pituitary-Dependent Hyperadrenocorticism (PDH): The most frequently occurring type, responsible for about 85% of cases, PDH is caused by a benign tumor in the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. This tumor triggers the overproduction of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), prompting the adrenal glands to release excessive cortisol.

Adrenal-Dependent Hyperadrenocorticism (ADH): Less common than PDH, ADH arises when a tumor develops in one or both adrenal glands, leading to increased cortisol output.

Typical clinical signs of Cushing’s syndrome include:

  • Heightened thirst and urination
  • An increased appetite
  • Abdominal distension, often described as a "pot-bellied" look
  • Hair loss, particularly on the trunk
  • Thinning of the skin
  • Muscle weakness and reduced energy
  • Panting
  • Frequent skin infections

Because these signs appear gradually, they may be mistaken for ordinary age-related changes. A comprehensive veterinary examination is therefore crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective management.
